Design for the night.
You have spent months, sometimes years, considering the architecture, interiors, materials, artwork and landscape of your project.
But what happens when daylight disappears?
Chiaroscuro works with homeowners, architects and interior designers to shape how exceptional spaces feel after dark.

Residential visual concept
Private homes.
Designed for the night.
A home should feel different after dark.
Quieter. Warmer. More intimate.
Good lighting is not about making night look like day. It is about deciding what should be revealed, what should recede and where darkness should remain.
We design the transition into evening so that architecture, interiors, artwork, materials and landscape continue to feel connected long after daylight has disappeared.
Your project doesn’t end at sunset.
Architecture is usually conceived in daylight.
Interiors are presented in daylight.
Gardens are photographed in daylight.
Yet much of the time we actually experience our homes, restaurants and hospitality spaces is after dark.
That is the part Chiaroscuro specialises in.
We consider what should be revealed, what should remain quiet, where the eye should travel and how architecture, interior, landscape and artwork should come together once daylight has gone.
This is where lighting stops being a collection of fittings and becomes part of the experience of the space.
Built work. Published thinking.
The approach has been developed through residential work, hospitality projects, collaboration with architects and interior designers, published writing and years spent understanding how light behaves in real buildings.
The studio presents a limited selection. Much of our residential work remains private, at the request of the clients we design for.
Most spaces are designed for daylight and merely lit at night.
Chiaroscuro is concerned with what happens after that. We design the atmosphere, mood and experience of a space once natural light has gone, composing light and darkness rather than simply making a room bright.
Atmosphere
How a room feels before anything is understood.
Hierarchy
What is seen first, and what is allowed to recede.
Experience
How a space is moved through once night falls.

A considered approach, grounded in experience
Chiaroscuro Lighting is led by Michael Bamling, Creative Lighting Consultant and founder of the practice.
His approach combines design thinking with decades of practical experience of how buildings are constructed, detailed and used.
That matters because the lighting has to work beyond the drawing. It has to integrate with architecture, interiors, controls and construction, and still feel effortless when the house is finally lived in.
Michael is also the author of three books on lighting and has developed a substantial body of essays, talks and published thinking around atmosphere, darkness and the experience of space after dark.
Thinking about light after dark
Chiaroscuro’s work is supported by an ongoing body of writing, books, essays and talks exploring how we experience architecture once daylight disappears.
